The Commissioner is responsible for all Department
activities. To support the overall function of the Department and
the work of individual divisions, the Commissioner’s Office
encompasses three distinct programs. The Business Office
handles fiscal matters and personnel administration. The Operations Office manages facilites issues as well as planning and many federal and state reporting requirements.

December 2008 - Environmental Assistance: When most people think of the Department of Environmental Conservation, they immediately think of permits and regulations, but we do much more than regulate. DEC's Environmental Assistance Office is here to help guide and educate Vermonters of all ages. Following are links to information about some of the special programs the staff works on throughout the year.

The Annual Vermont State Science and Mathematics Fair offers junior and senior high school students the opportunity to explore our world, to broaden perspectives, deepen scientific understanding of how the world works, and report out the results of experimentation to their peers, teachers, and judges. Governor's Awards - 2009 will mark the 17th year that a Vermont Governor recognizes Vermont Citizens for their valuable contributions to environmental excellence and pollution prevention. Vermont School Carbon Challenge: The Agency of Natural Resources, The Department of Environmental Conservation and other public and private sector partners have collaborated with Carbon Challenge, Inc. to put into place a carbon reduction challenge issued to all Vermont Schools at the beginning of this school year. - December 2008 - New invasive aquatic plant confirmed in Vermont: In October 2008, aquatic biologists at the Agency of Natural Resources confirmed the arrival of a new invasive aquatic plant in Vermont, Myriophyllum heterophyllum (variable-leaved watermilfoil). The plant was found in Halls Lake in Newbury located on the eastern side of the state. Variable-leaved watermilfoil is a freshwater rooted perennial plant not native to Vermont.
